Winter league: round 3

Four teams turned out for round 3 of the Cornwall winter league on 6 December, 'enjoying' three games on a sodden Star Inn terrain in a steady drizzle.

Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn PC) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC) maintained the lead they established in the preceding rounds, with three wins today putting them on a total of 9 wins for 29 league points with a points difference of +50.

Narrowly holding onto second place are the defending winter league title holders, Ray Beresford (North Inn) and Drew Jarvis (Vogue PC), with Mark Hypponen (Tregony PC) and Pete 'PD' Downing (North Inn) snapping at their heels, Ray and Drew have 5 wins with 18 league points and +23; Mark and PD are on 6 wins, but miss out on second place because although they also have 18 league points they have a points difference of +19.

In fourth place, despite not playing today, are Dion Beechey and Rob Sullivan (both Coaching Inn PC), with 4 wins, 13 league points and +8. Sarah Jarvis (Vogue) and Pete English (North Inn) did play. Their 1 win, 5 league points, -45 from the rounds to date gives them fifth place ahead of the other two teams taking part, Arnaud Ruetsch and Richard Lapworth (both North Inn) and Roy Pemberton and Terry Jones (both Coaching Inn).

Round 4 will be on 10 January 2016.

Trophy comes home

After two years in which the Reg Daddow Memorial has been won by teams from Compton Petanque Club, in Great Western region, the competition held on 18 October saw the trophy come safely back across the Tamar.

Winners of the 2015 event were Anthony Frost, making a return to Cornwall petanque events after a serious illness, and long-time playing partner Gordon Couch.

In a nail-biting, perhaps even buttock-clenching final, Anthony and Gordon beat Colin 'Boot' Booth and Graeme Kirkham 13-12. After winning all of their previous games Boot and Graeme made a slow start in this one and were 8-0 down before they started scoring. They came back to lead 10-8 but it was then 12-12 and down to Boot's last ball, a point which was short by only 1 cm - a close-run thing!

Third in the competition, played in warm autumn sunshine at the Star Inn, St Day, were Susan Williamson and Ray Beresford, with Pete PD Downing and Mark Hypponen taking fourth.

Winners of the Plate competition were Kate Herrick and Pete Lynas, who beat Devon's Peter and Sue Smith 13-4 in the Plate final.

A big thank you to the visitors from Great Western and Devon regions, and to all who turned out. More than £150 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Kernow President's event

The annual Kernow Petanque President's event takes place on Sunday 4 October, at the Star Inn. Vogue, St Day.

The main competition will be a melée, a format in which teams are drawn at random in each round, so players don't need to come as part of a ready-made team. The event is open to all and is an ideal opportunity for new players to get a 'taste' of the game.

There will also be a pointing competition and the Kernow 2015 Shooting contest (for members only) will be held during the day.

Registration is from 10.00-10.15, with play starting at 10.30.

Rolls with a choice of roast meats will be available at lunchtime: if you would like to eat please let Kernow President Pete Lynas know by email in advance - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Players must not bring their own food to the pub.

Arnaud on target

Congratulations to Arnaud Ruetsch (North Inn PC) on winning the Kernow Petanque shooting championship, taking back the title he previously won in 2013.

The shooting contest took place during the annual President's Day event at the Star Inn, St Day. Second place went to Andrew Jarvis (Vogue PC), third to Roy Pemberton (Coaching Inn PC).

Winner of the President's Day melée was Paul Rundle (Tregony PC) - Paul also won the pointing competition held during the day - with Andrew Jarvis taking second and Barbara Brown (Tregony PC) third. All three had four wins from the five rounds played, with Paul just ahead on points difference.

Summer league - final results

Having led throughout the competition, Simon Penna, Rob Sullivan and Dion Beechey (Coaching Inn PC) clinched the Kernow Petanque summer league title today in the final round, played at the Star Inn, St Day.

Having won all of their games in previous rounds, however, they lost the first of the triples today to Lena Daddow (Vogue PC), Barbara Brown and Pete Lynas (Tregony PC). That result was enough to boost the latter up the table into second place.

Third were Colin 'Boot' Booth, Pete 'PD' Downing and Ray Beresford (North Inn PC), just ahead of Susan Williamson, Mark Hypponen and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC).

Two teams tied for fifth: Robert and Kate Herrick (Rising Sun PC) and Paul Rundle (Tregony), and Gordon Couch (Rising Sun), Rod Walker (Vogue PC), Richard Lapworth and Arnaud Ruetsch (North Inn). They were just ahead of seventh-placed team Andrew Jarvis (Vogue), Terry Jones and Roy Pemberton (Coaching Inn).
