New committee for 2016

The new Kernow Petanque Management Committee, voted in on Sunday 7 February at the AGM, sees Colin 'Boot' Booth stepping into the post of Vice-President (Development) and Susan Williamson taking on the role of Secretary.

Other officers remain in post, with Boot's previous role of Promotion and Publicity Officer to be split temporarily between the posts of Vice-President and Membership Secretary.

The meeting - unfortunately very poorly attended by members - voted thanks to former Secretary Wendy Booker and Vice-President Robert Herrick for the contributions they have made to the region.

The current Kernow committee is: Peter Lynas (President); Colin Booth (Vice-President); Kate Herrick (Treasurer); Susan Williamson (Secretary); Graeme Kirkham (Membership Secretary); Andrew Jarvis (Playing Officer); Sarah Jarvis (Youth Development Officer).

After the meeting Alan Fowles of the social enterprise Hope in the Heart (www.hopeintheheart.org), based in Penzance, gave a short presentation on the organisation's work in linking towns in the south west with Soweto in South Africa, including introducing local communities in the latter to petanque.

Kernow Petanque AGM

Kernow Petanque's Annual General Meeting takes place at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 7 February. The meeting will start at about 2.30pm (it may be delayed for a few minutes if winter league games overrun or there are customers in the restaurant).

Agendas have been sent to all current members. Key points for the meeting will be plans for future coaching, promotion and recruitment for the region, the format for the summer league, and election of officers. The posts of Vice-President (Development) and Secretary are currently vacant but all posts are open for nominations.

This is an important meeting and it would be good to have a large turnout of members.

Please note: only members who have paid their 2016 subscriptions will be eligible to vote at the meeting and to stand for officer posts. Subscriptions can be renewed online via the EPA website (preferable) or paid by cash or cheque at the beginning of the meeting.

Jingle boules!

The annual Kernow Petanque Santa Shoot event takes place at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 13 December. Registration 10.00-10.15; play starts at 10.30.

The event will be a melée - playing partners are drawn for each round so you don't need to come as part of a team. It is open to all: new players and those who haven't played for some time will be very welcome. Spare boules will be available if you don't have your own.

Entry £5 per player. There may be mince pies!

Happy Yule Boules!

A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Kernow Petanque members and to all petanque players everywhere

Winter league: round 3

Four teams turned out for round 3 of the Cornwall winter league on 6 December, 'enjoying' three games on a sodden Star Inn terrain in a steady drizzle.

Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn PC) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC) maintained the lead they established in the preceding rounds, with three wins today putting them on a total of 9 wins for 29 league points with a points difference of +50.

Narrowly holding onto second place are the defending winter league title holders, Ray Beresford (North Inn) and Drew Jarvis (Vogue PC), with Mark Hypponen (Tregony PC) and Pete 'PD' Downing (North Inn) snapping at their heels, Ray and Drew have 5 wins with 18 league points and +23; Mark and PD are on 6 wins, but miss out on second place because although they also have 18 league points they have a points difference of +19.

In fourth place, despite not playing today, are Dion Beechey and Rob Sullivan (both Coaching Inn PC), with 4 wins, 13 league points and +8. Sarah Jarvis (Vogue) and Pete English (North Inn) did play. Their 1 win, 5 league points, -45 from the rounds to date gives them fifth place ahead of the other two teams taking part, Arnaud Ruetsch and Richard Lapworth (both North Inn) and Roy Pemberton and Terry Jones (both Coaching Inn).

Round 4 will be on 10 January 2016.
