'Open season' for Cornwall petanque

Petanque events in Cornwall this autumn and winter are open to all players, not just to members of the Cornwall region. New players and those returning to the game will be very welcome.

October is going to be a busy month. First on the calendar is the Kernow Petanque President's event, to be held at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 4 October. This is likely to take the form of a melée, with playing partners picked at random for each round - full details to be announced shortly. (The Kernow Shooting Championship will be held during the day: this will only be open to current members of the region.)

Sunday 11 October sees the start of the Cornwall winter league. This is a competition for pairs and is played approximately monthly at the Star Inn through the winter. Registration 10.00-10.15, start of play 10.30.

On Sunday 18 October the Star is the venue for the Reg Daddow Memorial doubles event. This is our major charity fund-raiser of the year and has in the past attracted a good number of visiting teams. Again, new players are very welcome. Registration 10.00-10.15, start of play 10.30.

Looking further ahead, the annual Santa Shoot competition takes place on 13 December. Full details available nearer the date.

It may pour, it may freeze - no reason to stop playing petanque!

Good result for Kernow from the inter-regionals

Cornwall's squad for the English Petanque Association Inter-Regional competition came home with its best result since 2012, winning 26 of the 48 games played over the weekend and just missing out on promotion.

Kernow Petanque, the smallest of the EPA's regions, took part in Division 2 of the Challenge competition, sending a squad of 13 players and a team manager to compete against teams from Wales, West Midlands, Thames Valley, Sussex and eastern and northern England. The event, held at Hayling Island near Portsmouth over the weekend of 12-13 September, was attended by hundreds of petanque players from all over England and Wales.

Cornwall's most successful team was Kernow 2 - Colin 'Boot' Booth, Roy Pemberton and Graeme Kirkham - who won eight of their 12 games and lost another to the frustratingly small margin of 12-13. They ended the competition with a points difference of +16.

Kernow 1, made up of Pete Lynas, Paul Rundle and Susan Williamson, won seven games (+10) with two narrow defeats of 12-13. Last year, playing at Kernow 4, the three were members of Cornwall's top team, gaining nine wins. Terry Jones, Rob Sullivan and Andy Rose made up Kernow 3 and took six wins (-1).

Kernow 4 - Pete 'PD' Downing, Robert Herrick, Andrew Jarvis and Enid Rose - had five wins (-12), but again had two narrow losses, 12-13.

Team manager Kate Herrick did a great job keeping tabs on progress and making sure that teams were where they were supposed to be at the right time, as well as providing general encouragement and moral support!

The 26 Cornwall wins this year compare with 27 in 2012, a result which took us briefly into Division 1 of the Challenge in 2013; just 18 wins that year meant back to Division 2 in 2014, when we won 23 games. This year's result put us in fourth place in Division 2 and narrowly missed gaining promotion into Division 1 of the Challenge, with our points difference just falling short of the team above. The number of 'near misses' in the results means that even a small improvement in our game for the 2016 event could see us move up the following year to join our neighbours across the Tamar, Devon region, who this year for the second year running took first place in Division 1.

A big thank you to EPA President Martin Eggleton and his team for the smooth running of the event, and to whoever was in charge of the weather: despite the forecast we had perfect warm and sunny petanque conditions over most of the two days of play!

Cornwall Singles - new men's and women's champions

The new Cornwall regional Men's Singles champion is Colin 'Boot' Booth, of the North Inn Petanque Club, Pendeen.

Good consistent pointing and effective shooting gave him a 13-9 win in the final against runner-up Graeme Kirkham of Tregony PC.

Winner of the new Women's Singles title was Sarah Jarvis. She beat fellow Vogue PC player Lena Daddow 13-11 in the final. The women's competition was an innovation this year and the first time anyone can remember there being a separate Singles event for women in the very small Cornwall region.

The turnout of eight women and 14 men was the best for a Kernow Singles competition for a number of years. The competition took place at Cornwall's principal petanque venue, the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 2 August.

Third place in the men's competition went to Simon Penna, of the Coaching Inn PC, St Columb Major, and the Men's Plate was won by Roy Pemberton, also Coaching Inn. Steven Boyne (Rising Sun PC, Altarnun) took second in the Plate.

Both Men's and Women's competitions played five rounds before going into the knockout stage. Sarah and Lena headed the women's event with an equal tally from these games of four wins and a points difference of +20. Third highest score was by Enid Rose (Rising Sun PC) with three wins and -7; Kate Herrick, another Rising Sun player, had two wins, +2.

Top scorers among the men in these rounds were Simon Penna, with four wins, +33, Arnaud Ruetsch (four wins, +18), Graeme Kirkham (four wins, +12), Rob Sullivan (3 wins, +9) and Boot (3 wins, +5).

In the quarter finals Simon Penna beat Pete Lynas (Tregony PC), Graeme Kirkham beat Ray Beresford (North Inn), Boot beat Rob Sullivan (Coaching Inn) and Arnaud (North Inn) beat Mark Hypponen (Tregony). In the semis Graeme beat Simon 13-7 and Boot won 13-8 against Arnaud.

The next Kernow regional titles event is the Triples competition on Sunday 6 September.

2015 triples champions

The new Kernow triples champions are Simon Penna, Rob Sullivan and Roy Pemberton, all of the Coaching Inn PC. They won all of their games at the 2015 triples contest to take the title for the second year running.

Runners-up at the event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 6 September, were Andrew and Sarah Jarvis (Vogue PC) and Pete English (North Inn PC), with three wins from four games.

Turnout for this year's triples event was very disappointing indeed, with only five teams taking part in what should be the major event of the regional calendar.

Cornwall Singles coming up

This Sunday 2 August will see the Kernow Petanque regional Singles competition, to be held at the Star Inn, St Day.

Registration 10.00-10,15, start of play 10.30.

As a regional trophy competition this event is open only to current paid-up members of Kernow Petanque.
