Two losses for Kernow in 2015 inter-regional matches

There were disappointing results for Cornwall in both the inter-regional events played this summer.

The first of these was the annual joust against Devon region, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on 28 June. Six triples played five rounds with Devon coming out with 20 wins against Cornwall's ten.

Four Cornwall teams managed two wins. Roy Pemberton, Terry Jones and Dion Beechey of the Coaching Inn PC had the best result, with a points difference of +3. Rob Sullivan, Andy Rose and Mark Hypponen had a zero points difference, Pete English, Andrew and Sarah Jarvis had -3 and the North Inn PC triple of Colin Boot Booth, Ray Beresford and Pete PD Downing came out with -7.

Two teams took one win: Barbara Brown, Lena Daddow and Pete Lynas, and Paul Rundle, Kate and Robert Herrick.

Devon gained a second victory a week later at the three-way competition played against Great Western and Kernow at the Isca Centre, Exeter, on 5 July. Devon took 15 wins from their 24 games, Great Western 11 and Cornwall eight.

The most successful Cornwall team was Ray, Boot and PD from the North Inn, who took three wins from their four games and ended with a points difference of +10. Two other teams - both including 'borrowed' players from Devon because of illness in the Cornwall squad - had two wins. Another Kernow triple won one out of four and two had a very disappointing day with no victories.

Other members of the Cornwall squad were Lena Daddow, Pete English, Sue Hardy, Kate and Robert Herrick, Mark Hypponen, Sarah Jarvis, Dave Lynas, Pete Lynas, Roy Pemberton, Andy and Enid Rose, and Paul Rundle. Barbara Brown and Andrew Jarvis were both unable to play because of illness: many thanks to Costa Drakatos and Del Hansen for stepping in.

Another win for Mark and PD

Following their win last month in the Cornwall Easter Egg Shoot, Mark Hypponen and Pete PD Downing have come out top again, taking the trophy in this year's Kernow Regional Doubles competition. Mark is a member of Tregony PC, PD of the North Inn PC at Pendeen.

Nine teams took part in the event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 3 May.

After five rounds of timed games Ray Beresford (North Inn) and Susan Williamson (Tregony) were leading with 4 wins, a draw and a points difference of +22, just ahead of Mark and PD who had the same number of wins, plus a draw and a points difference of +20.

Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony) had 4 wins (+8) and the fourth placed team of Dion Beechey and Rob Sullivan of the Coaching Inn PC, St Columb Major, were on 3 wins (+11).

In the semi-finals Rob and Dion beat Ray and Susan and Mark and PD beat Boot and Graeme in a tight game which went to 13-12.

Mark and PD took the final 13-8 against Rob and Dion.

The plate competition ended with a 'husbands V wives' final: Enid Rose (Rising Sun PC) and Sarah Jarvis (Vogue PC) went down 13-1 to Andy Rose (Rising Sun) and Andrew Jarvis (Vogue).

Summer league 2015 - round 1

The Kernow Petanque summer league competition kicked off on Sunday 26 April with the teams entered all meeting at the Star Inn, St Day, for the first round. A turnout of seven teams meant there had to be a bye but six teams then played the usual format of two triples games, doubles and singles.

The most successful team was Tregony PC's Susan Williamson, Mark Hypponen and Graeme Kirkham (fourth member Sue Hardy is recovering from pneumonia). They played Robert and Kate Herrick (Rising Sun PC) and Paul Rundle (Tregony PC) and marked up four wins, with Mark taking the singles 13-3 against Robert.

In second place were Andrew Jarvis (Vogue PC) with Roy Pemberton and Terry Jones of Coaching Inn PC. They played the North Inn PC's Ray Beresford, Pete PD Downing and Colin 'Boot' Booth and won both the triples games, with Ray and PD winning the doubles and Boot coming out 13-10 in the singles against Andrew.

Lena Daddow (Vogue PC) with Barbara Brown and Pete Lynas (both Tregony PC) had a roller-coaster in four games against Rod Walker (Vogue), Richard Lapworth (North Inn) and Gordon Couch (Rising Sun). They won the first triples 13-7, lost the second 2-13, took the doubles 13-0 and lost the singles 9-13. Points difference gave them the edge for third place.

Current ranking is (1) Susan, Mark, Graeme and Sue, (2) Andrew, Roy and Terry, (3) Lena, Barbara and Pete, (4) Rod, Richard and Gordon, (5) Ray, PD and Boot, and (6) Robert, Kate and Paul. The seventh team, Simon Penna, Dion Beechey and Rob Sullivan (Coaching Inn PC), is yet to play.

Round 2 matches must take place on or before 17 May.

Great start to Cornwall season

Twelve pairs turned out for the beginning of season open Easter Egg Shoot event at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 12 April, with a good mix of familiar faces and new and returning players.

Overall winners were Pete PD Downing (North Inn PC) and Mark Hypponen (Tregony PC), who beat Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony) 13-9 in the final of the Main competition.

The other semi-finalists were Drew Jarvis (Vogue PC) and Pete Lynas (Tregony), who lost to PD and Mark, and Kevin Conac and Rob Strickland of St Austell, both new to Cornwall petanque competitions, who, after a good run of results in the event, lost to Boot and Graeme. A decider gave third place in the competition to Drew and Pete.

The Plate competition was won by Rob Sullivan and Dion Beechey of Coaching Inn PC, who beat Andy and Enid Rose of Stenalees to take the top place.

The Kernow Petnque summer league begins on 26 April, with the first round matches taking place at the Star Inn, Vogue. The Regional Doubles competition is at the Star on 3 May. For more information contact Kernow Petanque Playing Officer Drew Jarvis via the Contact Us page.
