Cornwall at the 2014 Inter-regionals

Four Kernow Petanque teams took part in Division 2 of the 2014 English Petanque Association Inter-regional Challenge competition, held over the weekend of 13-14 September at Hayling Island, Hampshire.

One of the Cornwall teams had a spectacularly good set of results, winning nine of their twelve games over the two days. However, the results overall were disappointing, with a total of only 23 wins from the 48 games played.

Top team was Kernow 4 - Pete Lynas, Rosemary Piggin, Paul Rundle and Susan Williamson, all of Tregony Petanque Club. They won six of their seven games on Saturday, losing the first of the day narrowly 11-13, and three of the five games on Sunday, dishing out a fanny (13-0) to a Welsh team in the process.

In the final game on Sunday Peter, Paul and Rosemary (Susan was taking her turn to sit out) trailed 12-7 to a team from Heart of England (former West Midlands) region, but fought back point by point in a nail-biting climax to take the win 13-12. This despite enthusiastic support for their opposition from a large crowd of Heart of England players.

Kernow 1 - Hugh Appleton, Simon Penna and Rob Sullivan - took six wins from the twelve games, with narrow defeats against Heart of England (12-13) on Saturday and Thames Valley (11-13) on Sunday.

Colin 'Boot' Booth, Barney Knapp and Roy Pemberton, the Kernow 3 team, won five of their games over the weekend, with narrow losses of 12-13 to Isle of Wight and 11-13 to Eastern on Saturday.

Kernow 2 - Robert Herrick, Ian Johnson, Graeme Kirkham and Dave Piggin - had a disappointing weekend, with only three wins from twelve games. There were narrow losses to Isle of Wight 2 (12-13) on Saturday and Thames Valley 1 (11-13) on Sunday.

The Cornwall squad's best rounds were those against Thames Valley, Great Western and Eastern on Saturday, with three wins out of four in each, and the final round against Heart of England on Sunday, with all four teams winning their games. By contrast, all four lost in the round against Thames Valley on Sunday.

Devon came out as the top region in the Division 2 Challenge, with Devon 1 as top team: John Baxter, Thierry Hacq and Franck Depreaux of Chudleigh Petanque Club won all 12 of their games. Kernow 1 managed six points against them on Saturday but with the score at 12-0 to the Devon trio it looked as though Kernow 2's game against them on Sunday was going to result in a fanny, the fate of several other teams during the weekend. However, the Cornwall players managed to take three points in one end and two in the following before the axe fell.

Good weather helped to make it a very enjoyable weekend of petanque. Warm thanks to Kernow Team Manager Kate Herrick for getting the teams to the right pistes at the right time and for all her other help and encouragement, and to departing EPA President Mike Pegg and his team for another successful Inter-regional event.

New Cornwall region triples champions

The 2014 Kernow Petanque triples champions are Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan, all members of the Treleigh Arms Petanque Society (TAPS). The three previously won the trophy in 2011.

Runners-up were Colin 'Boot' Booth and Barney Knapp, both North Inn Petanque Club, with Pete English of TAPS.

The competition was held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 7 September.

Simon and Rob will play in the Kernow 1 triple in Division 2 of the EPA Inter-Regional Challenge competition at Hayling Island next weekend. Boot, Barney and Roy will be playing as Kernow 3.

Good luck to all Cornwall's players going to the event.

Kernow president's event - Sunday 31 August

The Kernow Petanque President's event takes place next Sunday, 31 August, at the Star Inn, St Day, and will be a melee. This is an open event so all are welcome.

Registration 10.15-10.30. Start of play: 10.45. £5 per player.

There will also be petanque skills contests and a raffle - prizes would be welcome.

Rolls with roast pork, chicken or beef will be available for lunch from the Star.

The annual Kernow shooting competition will also be held - Kernow Petanque members only.

New Cornwall shooting champion

The 2014 regional shooting champion is Graeme Kirkham, of Tregony Petanque Club. He narrowly beat Dave Piggin, also of Tregony, and, in third place, last year's champion, Arnaud Ruetsch of the North Inn PC.

The shooting contest took place during the Kernow Petanque President's Day event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 31 August. There was a good turnout for a melee, including visitors from Devon and Great Western regions.

The overall winner of the melee was one of the Devon 'tourists', Franck Depreaux of Chudleigh PC, with Jock Turnham of Rising Sun PC in second place and another Devon player, Stewart Brown, taking third.

Arnaud Ruetsch took first place in a petanque skills competition.

The next event in the Kernow calendar is the regional triples competition, which takes place at the Star on Sunday 7 September.

Summer league round 3 status

Today's match at the Rising Sun gave three wins to the home team - Rae, Iain and Andy Argent - and they also have an extra win from an error in the previous score sheet. This puts them on seven wins; a triples win today for First Timers (Ray Beresford, Paul Rundle and Susan Williamson) gives them seven as well.

At the top of the table the Artistes still hold the lead with ten wins, followed by GDR and 2+1, both on eight. TAPS, Rising Sun and First Timers all have seven wins. This means there are six teams in contention for the top spot in round 4 of the league, to be played on 17 September. Watch this space!
