Cornwall Inter-Regional squad

Kernow Pétanque has named its squad for the English Petanque Association Inter-Regional competition, to be held at Mill Rythe, Hayling Island, over the weekend of 14-15 September.

The region will be entering four teams in the Challenge competition. Team 1 will be Andrew Jarvis (Vogue PC) with Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan (Treleigh Arms). Team 2 is Dave Piggin, Graeme Kirkham (both Tregony PC), Ian Johnson (Vogue PC) and Robert Herrick (Rising Sun PC).

Three members of Team 3 are from the North Inn PC, Pendeen: Colin 'Boot' Booth, Pete 'PD' Downing and Barney Knapp. The fourth member is Paul Lancaster (Rising Sun PC).

Team 4 is from Tregony PC: Susan Williamson, Rosemary Piggin, Pete Lynas and Paul Rundle.

Team manager is Kate Herrick (Rising Sun PC).

We're looking forward to it - fingers crossed for good pétanque weather!

Summer league result

Winners of this year's Kernow Pétanque summer league were Piggin Hell: Dave and Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson, all of Tregony Pétanque Club. Runners-up in the competition were Barbara Brown, Lena Daddow and Pete Lynas, playing as 2 plus 1.

Lena Daddow took first place in the captains' competition.

These two teams were clear winners and, instead of the finals scheduled for 1 September, six of the league teams played a round robin as an end of league competition.

Winners were the North Stars: Andrew Jarvis  and Rod Walker of Vogue PC with Barney Knapp of the North Inn, Pendeen. Runners-up were Not a Clue, with Pete English, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan, all of Treleigh Arms Pétanque Society (TAPS). Third were the Trinites: Sarah Jarvis (Vogue PC) with Graeme Kirkham and Paul Rundle of Tregony PC.

Cornwall wins again

For the second year in succession Cornwall came out on top in Kernow Petanque's annual match against the Devon region, played at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 7 July.

The final score was close: 17 wins to Cornwall against 13 for Devon. The outcome was all the more creditable in that several of Cornwall's more experienced players were absent and four of the Cornwall team were playing in an inter-region event for the first time.

It was also a strong Devon squad, including chair of the English Petanque Association (EPA) umpiring commission and Devon president John Thatcher, EPA president Mike Pegg and last year's EPA shooting champion Franck Depreaux.

The best Cornwall performances came from Simon Penna, Hugh Appleton, Rob Sullivan and Roy Pemberton, of the Treleigh Arms Petanque Society (TAPS), and Pete PD Downing, Barney Knapp and Ray Beresford of the North Inn, Pendeen. Both teams won all five of their games.

Rae and Dave Argent (Rising Sun PC, Altarnun), with first-timers in a regional match Des and Barbara Yates (TAPS), won three out of five games. Two teams won two: Lena Daddow (Vogue PC), Barbara Brown, and Pete Lynas (both Tregony PC), and Pete English (TAPS) with Andrew and Sarah Jarvis (Vogue PC). Paul Rundle (Tregony) with first-timers Arnaud Ruetsch and Richard Lapworth had a bad day with no wins.

(Apologies to all our readers for the late posting of this report.)

New Kernow shooting champion

The new Cornwall precision shooting champion is Arnaud Ruetsch of Penzance. He convincingly took top place during the Kernow Pétanque regional shooting competition held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 18 August.

The shooting competition was part of the annual President's event. Second place went to Colin 'Boot' Booth of the North Inn Pétanque Club, Pendeen.

The day also featured a melée, won by Simon Penna with Rosemary Piggin as runner-up, and various pointing and pétanque skills contests.

Cornwall triples champions 2013

This year's Cornwall regional triples champions are Dave and Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson, all of Tregony PC.

Low turnout for the event - poor weather may have kept other teams away - meant that it was decided by a simple round robin between the five teams taking part. The Tregony team won all four of their games.

Runners-up were Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan (Treleigh Arms), with three games.

Other teams were Paul Rundle and Graeme Kirkham (both Tregony PC) and Ray Beresford (North Inn), Pete English (TAPS), Andrew Jarvis and Rod Walker (both Vogue PC), and Barbara Brown, Lena Daddow and Pete Lynas.
