Happy event!

Long-standing member of Kernow Pétanque Dave Lynas – holder of many past titles and current webmaster – and his wife Carla have recently become proud parents, with the birth of Sophie Eleanor. She weighed in at 7lb 14oz, or a bit less than two sets of boules! Sincere congratulations and very best wishes from all Kernow Pétanque players.

Kernow Petanque AGM

The Kernow Petanque Annual General Meeting will take place at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 12 February, starting at approximately 3pm after the end of play for the winter league competition.

Charity event success

2011 Reg Daddow Memorial Event WinnersEighteen teams took part in the 2011 Reg Daddow Memorial competition at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 23 October, raising a record donation from this annual event of £200 to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Players included seven pairs from clubs in Great Western region – a very big ‘thank you’ to them for their support – who travelled down to Cornwall for a weekend of pétanque.

Overall winners of the competition were Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan, both of the Treleigh Arms Petanque Society (TAPS), who also took first place in last year's event. They beat Great Western’s Mark Gilbert and Cary Bush in the final. In third place were Mike Hill and Simon Penna, both from Falmouth, and fourth, Graeme Kirkham and Susan Williamson of Tregony Pétanque Club.

The event – formerly the annual Kernow Pétanque Turkey Shoot – celebrates the contribution made by the late Reg Daddow and other players who first established the game in Cornwall. The Turkey Shoot tradition was maintained by the generous donation of a turkey for a raffle prize by another former player, butcher John Penglase of St Day.

Winter league goes into final rounds

With two more rounds to go there’s still all to play for in the Cornwall winter league. The top five teams are separated by only 17 points, which in the current league format is the score for a team winning all three games at the monthly league meetings.

After four rounds, fifth place is held by Dave and Rosemary Piggin, of Tregony Pétanque Club, with 41 points and a points difference of +37. Above them are three teams all with 43 points: Andrew and Sarah Jarvis (points difference -2), Jock Turnham and Gordon Couch (+18) and Mike Hill and Robert Herrick (Rising Sun PC), with a points difference of +25.

Currently in the lead are Graeme Kirkham and Susan Williamson of Tregony PC with 58 points (+80).

Fourteen teams are taking part in the competition, each round of which is held at the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day. The two final rounds will take place on 12 February and 11 March.

Charity pétanque event

The 2011 Reg Daddow Memorial competition will be held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 23 October. Our aim is to beat last year's donation total to the Macmillan Cancer charity.

The event is a doubles competition and open to all. Registration 10.00-10.15 - play starts 10.30. Entry fee, per team, £10.

There will be a raffle - prizes for this would be appreciated - and lunch will be available to players between 1 and 2; please do not bring your own food to the event.

We are expecting entries from Devon and Great Western players so there should be a good turnout. Do come along and help make this annual charity fundraiser an even bigger success than last year's.
