Cornwall summer league winners

This year's winners of the Kernow Pétanque summer league are a team from the Treleigh Arms Pétanque Society (TAPS): Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan. Simon also won the captain's contest, decided on singles games played between team captains during each round of the competition.

The summer competition was divided into two leagues, organised by Kernow Playing Officer Andrew Jarvis. In a final held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 2 September, the TAPS team beat the triple which topped the second league, Robert Herrick (Rising Sun PC), Ian Johnson and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC). (Fourth member of this triple during the season was Mike Hill, also Tregony.)

Taking third place were Dave Piggin, Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson, all of Tregony PC.

New Cornwall shooting champion

New shooting champion for Kernow Pétanque is Dave Piggin of Tregony Pétanque Club. He beat Peter Gliddon in a tie-break shoot-off after they tied on points in the main competition. In third place was Pete Thomas of the North Inn PC, Pendeen.

The shooting competition was held as part of the Kernow President's Day event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 12 August. The event also included a doubles competition, won by Colin 'Boot' Booth and Pete Thomas of the North Inn, with Regional doubles champions Simon Penna and Paul Lancaster in second place on points difference. Equal third were Susan Williamson and Pete Lynas and Roy Pemberton and Pete English.

Pete Downing of the North Inn PC and Robert Herrick of the Rising Sun PC, Altarnun took joint first place in a pointing and pétanque skills competition. Prizes for the day were organised on the French lot system: everyone taking part gets a prize, with those gaining the highest scores getting first choice from the selection. The day was organised by Kernow President Graeme Kirkham; many thanks to Simon Penna for taking on the barbecue.

A day by the sea for Cornwall boules players

Sunday 24 June marked the eighth consecutive year that Cornwall boulistes have met in Penzance on Quay Fair day to play informal games in St Anthony's Gardens. The Gardens lie just behind the Promenade and are also at the hub of the Quay Fair fun-fair: sea views, large crowds and high-volume noise from the rides make quite a contrast with the peaceful rural setting of our usual events at the Star Inn, St Day.

Fine weather brought a good turnout, including both regular players and a number who dust off their boules once a year specially for this event. The playing surfaces in the Gardens were acknowledged to be 'challenging' - an uneven layer of small beach gravel over very uneven tarmac - but rewarded those who took the trouble to look for a landing spot for their boules. The presence nearby of the Yacht Inn helped to console those who didn't. Here's to next year!

Stop press: a famous victory!

The annual Cornwall V Devon inter-regional triples match took place at Isca Petanque Club, Exeter, on Sunday 1 July. For the first time that anyone can remember Cornwall came out on top with a final score of Cornwall 23 wins, Devon 13, with an overall points difference of +63.

Six teams from each region took part. Team of the match were Cornwall's no 3, Simon Penna, Steven Boyne and Roy Pemberton, who won all six of their games during the day. Three other Kernow teams won four games and the others two.

Most of the Cornwall squad have taken part in previous Cornwall - Devon battles, but the victory was a particularly notable success for five members who have been playing at club level for less than two years.

Devon President John Thatcher was magnanimous in defeat: 'Congratulations to Kernow for not only winning yesterday but soundly thrashing Devon. It had to happen sometime and yesterday was your day, well done. We will return to you next year in Kernow and try to do much better.'

Many thanks to John and his team for hosting and organising the event.

Triples title gives Simon three in a row

Triples winners - Hugh, Simon and PaulFalmouth-resident Simon Penna and partners Paul Lancaster and Hugh Appleton took the Kernow Pétanque 2012 triples title at the Star Inn, St Day, on 10 June. Simon adds the title to those for the Singles and Doubles events which he won earlier this season.

The final saw Simon, Paul and Hugh win 13-7 against a team made up of Robert Herrick of the Rising Sun Petanque Club, Altarnun, and Dave Piggin and Graeme Kirkham of Tregony PC. In the semi-finals the latter won very narrowly 13-12 against Colin 'Boot' Booth, Ray Beresford and Pete 'PD' Downing of the North Inn PC at Pendeen. In the other semi-final Simon, Paul and Hugh beat Barbara Brown, Lena Daddow and Pete Lynas 13-9.

A playoff between the semi-finals runners-up gave third place in the event to the North Inn team. The Plate was won by Wendy Booker, Peter Gliddon and Kate Herrick (Rising Sun PC). Only seven teams took part in this year's competition, continuing a trend of disappointing support for regional events.
