Petanque at the Mill

South-east Cornwall shopping village Kernow Mill hosted a 'Boules Festival' on Sunday 30 September at its site just off the A38 at Trerulefoot. The event was organised by Kernow Pétanque Vice-President Robert Herrick with substantial logistics help from the Kernow Mill team.

Almost 30 players took part during the day, many from local twinning associations, particularly Torpoint and Saltash. Several new players also took the opportunity to try the game.

The specially laid out terrains on the Kernow Mill car park have bedded down well since the first pétanque event at this venue, held earlier this year on Bastille Day (14 July).

Second and third places in a melée competition went to husband and wife George and Barbara from Torpoint Twinning Association. First place went to Kernow Pétanque President Graeme Kirkham, who welcomed the chance which the event offered to bring together pétanque players from across Cornwall. Prizes were generously provided by Kernow Mill.

Autumn pétanque in Cornwall

Kernow Pétanque is working with the Kernow Mill shopping village in east Cornwall to organise a boules event at the Mill on Sunday 30 September. This follows the successful Bastille Day (14 July) pétanque celebration held at the same venue earlier this year.

The day will include pointing and shooting sessions, particularly aimed at new players, starting at 09.30, and a competition – probably a melée – from 11.00. The event is open to anyone interested – all welcome.

Also on offer will be the Kernow Mill shopping village itself, the regular car boot sale, a Skinners’ bar and various food offerings. Kernow Mill is just off the A38 at Trerulefoot, between Liskeard and Saltash.

The Cornwall winter league begins on Sunday 7 October. It will be a doubles competition and is open to all. More details from Andrew Jarvis (see Contacts page).

The Reg Daddow Memorial event takes place at the Star Inn, St Day, on 28 October. This is an open doubles competition. Watch this page for more details.

Cornwall summer league winners

This year's winners of the Kernow Pétanque summer league are a team from the Treleigh Arms Pétanque Society (TAPS): Simon Penna, Roy Pemberton and Rob Sullivan. Simon also won the captain's contest, decided on singles games played between team captains during each round of the competition.

The summer competition was divided into two leagues, organised by Kernow Playing Officer Andrew Jarvis. In a final held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 2 September, the TAPS team beat the triple which topped the second league, Robert Herrick (Rising Sun PC), Ian Johnson and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC). (Fourth member of this triple during the season was Mike Hill, also Tregony.)

Taking third place were Dave Piggin, Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson, all of Tregony PC.

Kernow at the Inter-Regionals

Cornwall players took third place among the eight teams competing in Division Two of the Challenge competition at this year’s English Petanque Association (EPA) Inter-Regional tournament, held over the weekend of 15-16 September.

The Kernow team won 27 games of the 48 played over the two days, with an overall points difference of +55. In first place was a Combined squad of players from last year’s top regions, which won 38 games (points difference of +243), followed by the East Midlands team with 32 wins (+109).

This is Cornwall’s best performance at the Inter-Regionals for several years and could see them promoted to Division One for next year’s contest. In last year’s Challenge Kernow won 21 games and came fifth out of seven.

After many years at Brean Sands, Somerset, this year’s Inter-Regionals moved to a new venue at Mill Rythe Holiday Village, Hayling Island, generally agreed to be a great improvement in terms of accommodation and facilities. The playing terrains were very varied and offered a real challenge for pointers.

Top Cornwall team in 2012 was Kernow 1: Hugh Appleton, Paul Lancaster and Simon Penna. Their nine wins and +47 points difference gained them third place among the teams in the Division Two competition.

Kernow 3 – Ian Johnson, Peter Lynas, Rosemary Piggin and Susan Williamson – won seven games (points difference +2) and Kernow 4 – Colin ‘Boot’ Booth, Peter ‘PD’ Downing, Roy Pemberton and Paul Rundle – won six games (+1).

Kernow 2 – Robert Herrick, Graeme Kirkham and Dave Piggin – won five overall (+5) but distinguished themselves by losing games in which they started out leading 7-0 and 11-3, apparently forgetting that the basic idea in pétanque is to keep getting your boules nearer the coche than those of your opponents . . .

Kernow team manager again this year was Kate Herrick, who recorded and reported scores, liaised between the squad and the organisers and generally kept things running smoothly; thanks to Kate from everyone.

  • Full results for the competition can be found on the English Petanque Association website (see the Links page).

New Cornwall shooting champion

New shooting champion for Kernow Pétanque is Dave Piggin of Tregony Pétanque Club. He beat Peter Gliddon in a tie-break shoot-off after they tied on points in the main competition. In third place was Pete Thomas of the North Inn PC, Pendeen.

The shooting competition was held as part of the Kernow President's Day event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 12 August. The event also included a doubles competition, won by Colin 'Boot' Booth and Pete Thomas of the North Inn, with Regional doubles champions Simon Penna and Paul Lancaster in second place on points difference. Equal third were Susan Williamson and Pete Lynas and Roy Pemberton and Pete English.

Pete Downing of the North Inn PC and Robert Herrick of the Rising Sun PC, Altarnun took joint first place in a pointing and pétanque skills competition. Prizes for the day were organised on the French lot system: everyone taking part gets a prize, with those gaining the highest scores getting first choice from the selection. The day was organised by Kernow President Graeme Kirkham; many thanks to Simon Penna for taking on the barbecue.
