Cornwall players at the inter-regionals

Kernow Petanque will not be taking part in the English Petanque Association's major inter-regional tournament at Hayling Island, Hampshire, this weekend, 9-11 September.

This is the first time for many years that a Cornwall squad has not participated in the inter-regionals. Regrettably, it was not possible to put together the number of players required for a viable squad and the region had no option other than to pull out.

However, the EPA asked for two Cornwall teams to form part of the Combined squad in the Challenge competition, division 2, and seven Kernow players will be travelling to Hayling Island for the competition.

The two teams are Andy and Enid Rose (Rising Sun PC), Paul Rundle and Susan Williamson (Tregony, and Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn), Roy Pemberton (Coaching Inn) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony).

Roy, the new Kernow shooting champion, will also be taking part in the EPA's precision shooting competition over the weekend.

Results from the inter-regionals will be shown and updated on the EPA website during the two days play:http://www.englishpetanque.org.uk/InterRegionalResults.html

2016 summer league results

Winners of the 2016 Cornwall inter-club summer league competition are Tregony Petanque Club, just taking a narrow victory over Vogue PC.

Both clubs won three of the five matches played - that is, took two or three of the three games played in each round - and also won nine games overall. Tregony took the title with a points difference of +34 against Vogue's +14.

The North Inn A team came home in third place with three match wins and eight game wins (+22). Behind them were the Coaching Inn (3 matches, 7 games, -26), North Inn B (2 matches, 8 games, +11) and the Rising Sun (1 match, 4 games, -53).

The final round saw Tregony and Vogue face each other at the Star Inn, with Vogue taking two games to one. The Vogue squad included former Kernow president Paul Johns (a past Star player, possibly even a star player!) and landlord Mark Graham.

The winter league competition will start in October and teams are already forming - watch this space for details.

New Cornwall shooting champion

The new Kernow Petanque precision shooting champion is Roy Pemberton, of the Coaching Inn Petanque Club, St Columb Major.

Roy took the title yesterday, Sunday 4 September, with an impressive performance which included shooting the jack three times out of four during the final round of the event.

Roy will now represent the Cornwall region at the English Petanque Association's national precision shooting competition, to be held at Hayling Island, Hampshire, this coming weekend.

The 2016 shooting contest was held as part of Kernow's President's Day event at the Star Inn, St Day. Runner-up in the competition was Kernow President Pete Lynas.

A sociable melée provided the main competition of the day, won narrowly by Paul Rundle over fellow Tregony PC member Mark Hypponen. Both had five wins from the five rounds played with Paul holding the top spot with a greater points difference.

A pointing competition was won by this year's Kernow women's singles title holder, Kate Herrick of the Rising Sun PC, Altarnun,

Cornwall triples results

The 2016 Kernow triples title goes to Coaching Inn Petanque Club's Simon Penna, Dion Beechey and Rob Sullivan. This was Simon's fifth win of the regional triples title and Rob's fourth.

The contest, held yesterday, Sunday 14 August, at the Star Inn, St Day, saw the trio from the St Columb Major club win four of the five games played, losing only the final game to runners-up Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn PC), Roy Pemberton (Coaching Inn) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC).

In third place of the six teams competing were Susan Williamson (Tregony), Peter 'PD' Downing and Ray Beresford (both North Inn).

The other triples taking part were Barbara Brown, Lena Daddow (both Vogue PC) and Paul Rundle (Tregony), Peter English (North Inn), Sarah and Andrew Jarvis (both Vogue PC), and Pete Lynas, Mark Hypponen (both Tregony) and Terry Jones (Coaching Inn).
