Winter league - last round

T-shirt weather today for the final games in the Cornwall winter league, held at the Star Inn, St Day. Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn PC) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC) took two more wins and a bye to give them a total of 47 league points and a win-lose points difference of +78.

Second place went to last year's winners Ray Beresford (North Inn) and Drew Jarvis (Vogue PC), with 31 league points and -3.

Pete English (North Inn) and Sarah Jarvis (Vogue) took third with 28 points (-10), squeaking in ahead of the absent Pete 'PD' Downing (North Inn) and Mark Hypponen (Tregony) who came home just behind on 27 points (+18).

Three other teams took part in the early rounds - Dion Beechey and Rob Sullivan, Roy Pemberton and Terry Jones (all from Coaching Inn PC), and Richard Lapworth and Arnaud Ruetsch (both North Inn) - but were hit by illness, injury and other commitments.

Kernow Petanque programme 2016

The Kernow Petanque calendar for 2016 is now available, offering a great mix of events for members and a number of dates which are open to all. It includes Regional Singles, Doubles and Triples competitions, an inter-regional match against Devon and a three-way event between Cornwall, Devon and Great Western.

This year's Summer League will operate to a new format as an inter-club or venue competition: details will be available soon.

Following the final round of the Winter League competition next Sunday, 13 March, the first event of the 2016 programme will be the Easter Egg Shoot, an open doubles contest to take place at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 3 April. Full details soon.

Winter league

The winter league round postponed from 7 February will take place at the Star, St Day, on Sunday 28 February.

Only one more round after this one, so all to play for!

Winter league - penultimate round

Colin Boot Booth and Graeme Kirkham clinched the 2015-2016 winter league title with two wins in the last-but-one round of the competition, played at the Star Inn on Sunday 28 February.

However, they lost again to fourth-placed duo Pete English and Sarah Jarvis, who broke their winning streak in the last round.

Boot and Graeme have notched up an overall total of 41 league points and a points difference of +54, ahead of last year's league winners, Ray Beresford and Drew Jarvis, who hold second place with 28 league points and +9. Hard on their heels are Mark Hypponen and Pete PD Downing (replaced by Susan Williamson in this round) with 27 points and +18.

Also just in contention for second and third places are Pete and Sarah, with 21 points and -16.

Although the league began with seven contending teams, illness and other commitments have meant that it has been reduced to these four. Final placings for second, third and fourth will be determined in the final round on Sunday 13 March.

New committee for 2016

The new Kernow Petanque Management Committee, voted in on Sunday 7 February at the AGM, sees Colin 'Boot' Booth stepping into the post of Vice-President (Development) and Susan Williamson taking on the role of Secretary.

Other officers remain in post, with Boot's previous role of Promotion and Publicity Officer to be split temporarily between the posts of Vice-President and Membership Secretary.

The meeting - unfortunately very poorly attended by members - voted thanks to former Secretary Wendy Booker and Vice-President Robert Herrick for the contributions they have made to the region.

The current Kernow committee is: Peter Lynas (President); Colin Booth (Vice-President); Kate Herrick (Treasurer); Susan Williamson (Secretary); Graeme Kirkham (Membership Secretary); Andrew Jarvis (Playing Officer); Sarah Jarvis (Youth Development Officer).

After the meeting Alan Fowles of the social enterprise Hope in the Heart (www.hopeintheheart.org), based in Penzance, gave a short presentation on the organisation's work in linking towns in the south west with Soweto in South Africa, including introducing local communities in the latter to petanque.
