2015 triples champions

The new Kernow triples champions are Simon Penna, Rob Sullivan and Roy Pemberton, all of the Coaching Inn PC. They won all of their games at the 2015 triples contest to take the title for the second year running.

Runners-up at the event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 6 September, were Andrew and Sarah Jarvis (Vogue PC) and Pete English (North Inn PC), with three wins from four games.

Turnout for this year's triples event was very disappointing indeed, with only five teams taking part in what should be the major event of the regional calendar.

Cornwall Singles - new men's and women's champions

The new Cornwall regional Men's Singles champion is Colin 'Boot' Booth, of the North Inn Petanque Club, Pendeen.

Good consistent pointing and effective shooting gave him a 13-9 win in the final against runner-up Graeme Kirkham of Tregony PC.

Winner of the new Women's Singles title was Sarah Jarvis. She beat fellow Vogue PC player Lena Daddow 13-11 in the final. The women's competition was an innovation this year and the first time anyone can remember there being a separate Singles event for women in the very small Cornwall region.

The turnout of eight women and 14 men was the best for a Kernow Singles competition for a number of years. The competition took place at Cornwall's principal petanque venue, the Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, on Sunday 2 August.

Third place in the men's competition went to Simon Penna, of the Coaching Inn PC, St Columb Major, and the Men's Plate was won by Roy Pemberton, also Coaching Inn. Steven Boyne (Rising Sun PC, Altarnun) took second in the Plate.

Both Men's and Women's competitions played five rounds before going into the knockout stage. Sarah and Lena headed the women's event with an equal tally from these games of four wins and a points difference of +20. Third highest score was by Enid Rose (Rising Sun PC) with three wins and -7; Kate Herrick, another Rising Sun player, had two wins, +2.

Top scorers among the men in these rounds were Simon Penna, with four wins, +33, Arnaud Ruetsch (four wins, +18), Graeme Kirkham (four wins, +12), Rob Sullivan (3 wins, +9) and Boot (3 wins, +5).

In the quarter finals Simon Penna beat Pete Lynas (Tregony PC), Graeme Kirkham beat Ray Beresford (North Inn), Boot beat Rob Sullivan (Coaching Inn) and Arnaud (North Inn) beat Mark Hypponen (Tregony). In the semis Graeme beat Simon 13-7 and Boot won 13-8 against Arnaud.

The next Kernow regional titles event is the Triples competition on Sunday 6 September.

Two losses for Kernow in 2015 inter-regional matches

There were disappointing results for Cornwall in both the inter-regional events played this summer.

The first of these was the annual joust against Devon region, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on 28 June. Six triples played five rounds with Devon coming out with 20 wins against Cornwall's ten.

Four Cornwall teams managed two wins. Roy Pemberton, Terry Jones and Dion Beechey of the Coaching Inn PC had the best result, with a points difference of +3. Rob Sullivan, Andy Rose and Mark Hypponen had a zero points difference, Pete English, Andrew and Sarah Jarvis had -3 and the North Inn PC triple of Colin Boot Booth, Ray Beresford and Pete PD Downing came out with -7.

Two teams took one win: Barbara Brown, Lena Daddow and Pete Lynas, and Paul Rundle, Kate and Robert Herrick.

Devon gained a second victory a week later at the three-way competition played against Great Western and Kernow at the Isca Centre, Exeter, on 5 July. Devon took 15 wins from their 24 games, Great Western 11 and Cornwall eight.

The most successful Cornwall team was Ray, Boot and PD from the North Inn, who took three wins from their four games and ended with a points difference of +10. Two other teams - both including 'borrowed' players from Devon because of illness in the Cornwall squad - had two wins. Another Kernow triple won one out of four and two had a very disappointing day with no victories.

Other members of the Cornwall squad were Lena Daddow, Pete English, Sue Hardy, Kate and Robert Herrick, Mark Hypponen, Sarah Jarvis, Dave Lynas, Pete Lynas, Roy Pemberton, Andy and Enid Rose, and Paul Rundle. Barbara Brown and Andrew Jarvis were both unable to play because of illness: many thanks to Costa Drakatos and Del Hansen for stepping in.

Cornwall Singles coming up

This Sunday 2 August will see the Kernow Petanque regional Singles competition, to be held at the Star Inn, St Day.

Registration 10.00-10,15, start of play 10.30.

As a regional trophy competition this event is open only to current paid-up members of Kernow Petanque.

Another win for Mark and PD

Following their win last month in the Cornwall Easter Egg Shoot, Mark Hypponen and Pete PD Downing have come out top again, taking the trophy in this year's Kernow Regional Doubles competition. Mark is a member of Tregony PC, PD of the North Inn PC at Pendeen.

Nine teams took part in the event, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 3 May.

After five rounds of timed games Ray Beresford (North Inn) and Susan Williamson (Tregony) were leading with 4 wins, a draw and a points difference of +22, just ahead of Mark and PD who had the same number of wins, plus a draw and a points difference of +20.

Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony) had 4 wins (+8) and the fourth placed team of Dion Beechey and Rob Sullivan of the Coaching Inn PC, St Columb Major, were on 3 wins (+11).

In the semi-finals Rob and Dion beat Ray and Susan and Mark and PD beat Boot and Graeme in a tight game which went to 13-12.

Mark and PD took the final 13-8 against Rob and Dion.

The plate competition ended with a 'husbands V wives' final: Enid Rose (Rising Sun PC) and Sarah Jarvis (Vogue PC) went down 13-1 to Andy Rose (Rising Sun) and Andrew Jarvis (Vogue).
