North Inn points the way

Despite a cold, windy day with little sign of Spring, the traditional Easter Egg Shoot season-opener for Cornwall's boules players attracted a near record turnout of 15 pairs, including two visiting teams from Devon.

Held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 7 April, the event was a striking success for the North Inn Pétanque Club, Pendeen, with two teams from the club facing each other in the final. Overall winners were Pete 'PD' Downing and Barney Knapp, with Colin 'Boot' Booth and Ray Beresford taking second place.

The losing semi-finalists were Devon visitors John and Rose Thatcher and Tregony PC's Susan Williamson with - playing for the first time in several years - Rachel Ellis.

The plate competition was won by another Devon pair, Peter and Sue Smith, who beat Tregony's Graeme Kirkham and a new player in his first competition, Cliff Tunnicliffe.

Next event on the calendar is the Cornwall regional Doubles competition on 21 April. Entry is restricted to paid up members of Kernow Pétanque: memberships can be paid on the day.
