Cornwall charity contest

Thunder, lightning, gusty winds and sheets of rain in the morning, warm sunshine and a gentle breeze in the afternoon: that was the weather story for Kernow Petanque’s annual charity event, the Reg Daddow Memorial competition, held at the Star Inn, St Day, on Sunday 20 October.
Eleven pairs turned out to brave the poor forecast and the day produced both some good petanque and a donation of £125 for Macmilllan Cancer Care.
Overall winners were Jim Britton and Adrian Williams, both from the Compton Inn Petanque Club, near Bath. They came out victors 13-6 in the final against runners-up Peter ‘PD’ Downing of the North Inn PC, Pendeen, and Graeme Kirkham of Tregony PC.
Jim and Adrian beat Andrew and Sarah Jarvis of Vogue PC in one semi-final and PD and Graeme won the other against Ray Beresford of the North Inn PC and Susan Williamson of Tregony. A playoff between the losing semi-finalists gave third place in the contest to Andrew and Sarah.
The Plate competition was won by Colin ‘Boot’ Booth and Barney Knapp of North Inn PC with Ged and Ann Barton from the Devon region of the English Petanque Association as runners-up.
Thanks to all who turned out for the competition, particularly to the visiting pairs from Great Western and Devon regions, and also to Mark and Rachel at the Star Inn for very welcome soup in the morning and an excellent lunch.
