Charity event trophy goes across the Tamar again

Kernow Petanque's Reg Daddow Memorial event has been won by a team visiting from outside Cornwall for the second year running.

Winners of the 2014 contest, held at the Star Inn, St Day on Sunday 26 October, were John Murray and Martin Britton - the Compton Vikings - of Compton Petanque Club, near Bath. Runners-up were last year's winners, also from Compton PC, Jim Britton and Adrian Williams, who went down 4-13 in the final.

Three Devon teams also travelled to take part in the competition, which, with a rather disappointing turnout of only nine Cornish teams, made a total of 14 pairs for the event. This was up on last year, however, as was the amount raised for Macmillan Cancer Support, with a total donation of £260 coming from entries, a raffle and pointing and shooting contests.

Leaders after the morning rounds were Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn PC) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC), with four wins from four games (including victories against both the eventual finalists!), but they crashed out spectacularly in the first of the afternoon's knockout rounds in the main competition, losing 13-0 to John Baxter and Franck Depreaux of Chudleigh PC, Devon.

Three other Cornish teams went into the main: Gordon Couch and Rod Walker lost to the Compton Vikings in round 1; Ray Beresford and Pete Downing (North Inn PC) beat Kate and Robert Herrick of the Rising Sun PC but then lost to the Vikings in round 2.

John and Franck of Chudleigh lost to Jim and Adrian, the other Compton team, in round 2, leaving an all Compton final.

In the Plate contest Pete English (Treleigh Arms Petanque Society) and Andrew Jarvis (Vogue PC) beat Jane Mackenzie and Markku Hypponen in round 1 and Terry Jones and Roy Pemberton of the new Coaching Inn PC, St Columb Major, in round 2.

Peter and Sue Smith (Ottery PC) beat Paul Rundle and Pete Lynas (Tregony PC) in round 1, then faced off clubmates John and Rose Thatcher in round 2, the latter having won against Barbara Brown and Lena Daddow. In the final the Smiths narrowly took the victory 13-12 from Pete and Andrew.

The shooting competition was won by Franck Depreaux and the pointing by John Thatcher.

Many thanks to all who turned out, and to the Star Inn for the pre-game soup and usual excellent lunchtime food.
