Boules in the sun at Exeter

There were no great successes for Cornwall players but some very high-standard petanque to be seen and sunshine all the way at the EPA's Singles and Doubles competitions in Exeter over the Bank Holiday weekend, 28-30 May.

Six Kernow members entered the events. Colin 'Boot' Booth (North Inn PC) and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony) took part in the Men's Singles contest on Saturday and Men's Doubles on Sunday. Pete Lynas and Paul Rundle (both Tregony) also took part in the Doubles, as did Robert Herrick (Rising Sun PC) paired with Devon player Costa Drakatos. Kate Herrick (Rising Sun) and Lesley Drakatos were the only south-west entries for the Women's Doubles, also played on Sunday.

The standard was high: Graeme's first round draw in the Singles pitted him against Sofiane Lachani, EPA singles winner in 2012 and member of the winning EPA men's triples teams in 2011 and 2013 and doubles team in 2011. Graeme was lucky to get 4 points! Boot also had very tough opposition and lost very narrowly to EPA Vice-President Martin Hughes in his third round game. Graeme and Boot both won one of the six games they played during the day.

The competition was again tough in the Doubles on Sunday, with only Boot and Graeme making it beyond the guaranteed two games in the knockout which followed the morning league. A single win from the three morning games put them into the Consolage. Successive wins in the afternoon games - including a very tight game against Devon's Rob Brealey and Colin Carter - took them into the consolage semi-finals. But no further . . .

Overall a very good weekend, and in particular a great opportunity to play against - and to watch and learn from - some of the best players in the country, not least some very impressive younger boulistes. Roll on next year! A big thank you to the EPA organisers and to John Thatcher and Devon region for making it happen.
