Cornwall players at Ottery charity event

Three Cornwall pairs made the trip across the Tamar for Ottery St Mary Petanque Club's annual Charity Shield competition yesterday, held in support of Hospiscare. A total of about £400 was raised for the charity during the day.

The visitors were Robert and Kate Herrick (Rising Sun PC), Eric Guy (Coaching Inn PC) and Mark Hypponen (North Inn PC), and Susan Williamson and Graeme Kirkham (Tregony PC). Susan and Graeme had a particularly good day, taking first place in the event.

The competition was limited to 16 teams, organised in four leagues for the morning rounds, with knockout games in the afternoon. Susan and Graeme won their three league rounds, and then met Thierry Hacq and Sally Richards in the quarter-finals, winning 13-1. In the semis they met John and Rose Thatcher, taking the game 13-3, and won the final against Peter and Sue Smith 13-7.

Eric and Mark won one of their morning games, taking them into the afternoon's plate competition. They went out in the quarter-finals, losing to a Plymouth PC duo who were the eventual plate winners. Robert and Kate won one game in the morning, and also went out in the plate quarter-finals.

During the lunch break there were pointing and shooting contests, and - a good innovation - a competition for accurate throwing of the jack.

The weather was perfect, the Ottery PC facilities very impressive and hospitality from the Club members, led by John and Rose Thatcher, extremely welcoming., with a special mention for the fantastic array of cakes! Thanks to all concerned: roll on next year!
